Contemporary art practice uses, criticizes and reinterprets our archives of the present. Increasingly, artists are becoming archivists themselves and creating counter-archives with their works. The exhibition gives space to artists who see their work as a contribution to the documentation, investigation and collection of memories of and material evidence of violence and trauma. The exhibited works locate memories within the framework of time-based knowledge shaped by power relations and illustrate how cultural techniques such as sound, architecture, photography and sculpture become repositories and voices for remembering and speaking out against past injustices.
